The Inland Mendocino Cooperative Weed Management Area has a looming
deadline that you can help us meet!
We received a start-up grant in which we promised to deliver, among
other things, invasive weed observations from the community, both to get
a better understanding of the distribution of weeds in our area and to
get the community aware and involved. We have tried a couple of
different approaches, including a roadside survey and an online
reporting system. We have done outreach through community meetings,
tabling, newspaper, radio, and e-mail lists. And so far we are only
halfway to our target, with only a few weeks to the project deadline
(May 30). We set a target of 70 community weed observers and so far we
only have about 30. If everyone on this mailing list reports one weed
observation, we might reach our target!
Can you help? If you are comfortable with a computer, you can use the
online form at imcwma.org, which includes an online map to help you
report the coordinates of your observation. Or you can simply send an
e-mail to coord at imcwma.org with the weed species (common name is OK) and
the location described as best you can and I will place it on the map
for you.
An example would be
"I saw French broom on Highway 253, 2.4 miles from Highway 101".
Mileage readings can come from your odometer or mileposts.
As an incentive, I have am offering free weed identifications, (one per
person) until May 15th.
Thanks for your help, Tara
PS. Please pass this on to your friends, relatives and neighbors!
